How It Works

The Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind project is a series of firsts for the U.S., Dominion Energy and Virginia.

Delivering Wind Power

The energy from each wind turbine will be “bundled” together at one of three offshore substations to be built within the offshore lease area. Undersea cables then deliver the energy onshore at State Military Reservation (SMR) in Virginia Beach. The cables continue underground through SMR to Naval Air Station Oceana. From there, we must get the energy onto the broader electric grid by connecting to our existing Fentress Substation in Chesapeake.

The Next Generation of Energy Leaders

The unprecedented nature of the CVOW project makes it a valuable learning opportunity, with significant research and study into the technology, environmental protection and advancement of sustainable energy.

Partnerships with universities like Old Dominion University, VIMS, and Hampton University and technician training programs at community colleges and other post-secondary institutions mean that Hampton Roads and the Commonwealth are positioned to become a premiere region in the country for clean energy job training and research.

Dominion Energy is working with K-12 educators, community colleges, colleges and universities and other educational partners throughout the region to help train today’s workforce and the next generation of clean energy employees. Through collaboration and partnerships, we’re helping build a pipeline of talent in engineering, supply chain management and shipbuilding and repair.

The Dominion Energy Charitable Foundation, Dominion Energy’s philanthropic organization, has also provided grant funding to the National Energy Education Development (NEED) Project to train the next generation of clean energy employees through an Offshore Wind for Students initiative. Through this initiative, NEED is developing K-12 curriculum on offshore wind energy and holding workshops to familiarize teachers with the curriculum. In the workshops, NEED also trains teachers on using hands-on classroom kits to support student learning.
